The 2018 Carignano del Sulcis Rocca Rubia impresses more for purity than power, presenting a display of sweet florals, crushed stone, bright cherry and hints of flowery undergrowth. It’s silky in texture, lifted by vibrant acidity, with tart wild berry fruits and saline-minerals giving way to violet tones toward the close. A subtle coating of tannin lingers, framing the experience nicely, as this tapers off with a bitter twang and hints of licorice. The 2017 Barolo Castelletto Vigna Pressenda is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon, cedar and red berry fruit all open in a beautifully layered, super-expressive Barolo from Conterno-Fantino. Beams of Castelletto tannin extend the finish while lending a real feeling of vibrancy throughout. The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is classic Gris. Bright, focused and taut in feel, 2017 offers up a whole range of floral and spice top notes that give the wine terrific freshness. On the palate, the Gris is a bit nervous, as it always is, yet with superb balance and class. The tannins can be a bit edgy here, but the 2017 keeps everything in check. The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Vigna Sorì Ginestra is another gorgeous, expressive wine in this range. Broad and ample, the 2017 captures all of the personality of this site. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice, espresso, dried flowers and pine infuse the 2017 with myriad layers of dimension. The 2017 Barolo Mosconi Vigna Ped is deep, resonant and expansive, as wines from this site tend to be. In this tasting, the Mosconi is wonderfully deep. Its stature alone is compelling. And yet there is so much to the Mosconi. Readers will find a Barolo that melds together a rich, racy expression of fruit with plenty of structure that wraps everything together. The 2017 Barolo La Serra needs time to come together, but it could turn out to be quite good. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, spice, mint and wild flowers give the 2017 a very pretty upper register to play off its translucent personality. Marcarini’s 2016 Barolo Brunate captures much of the mystique of this La Morra site in its beguiling aromatics. Deep, layered and so expressive, the 2016 has a lot to offer. Time in the glass brings out an exotic quality to the red toned fruit, with spice, menthol and floral overtones that linger. The 2017 Barolo Pernanno is laced with cherries in liqueur, dried rose petal, spice, sweet oak, cedar, tobacco and earthy notes. The 2015 Barolo Riserva is a very pretty wine. Effusive aromatics and mid-weight structure give the 2015 tons of immediacy and appeal. Crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, spice and orange zest add attractive layers of nuance that continue to develop as the wine opens in the glass.
