Black cherries, plums and floral notes with subtle, underlying citrus character. Full-bodied and structured. Chewy yet fine-grained tannins. Healthy and vibrant. Persistent length and depth. Give it more time to soften. Better after 2028.

Massimago “Marchesa Mariabella” Valpolicella Ripasso DOC BIO 2021 Wine Enthusiast 01/09/2023 91

“This elegant and refined wine opens with aromas of wild strawberries and tart cranberries dusted by savory spices and dried tobacco. Dried cherries pop on the palate with notes of clove, chocolate shavings and fresh earth finishing with lifted acidity.” — Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast

Fèlsina Fontalloro Toscana IGT 2019 Wine Enthusiast 01/09/2023 93
Verbiage

Freshly turned soil, spent coffee grounds and pencil shavings are on the nose with just a hint of dried cherry opening onto a palate bursting with fresh cherries and orange peel, structured by tannins that are welcoming but nonetheless hold their integrity. — Danielle Callegari

Carpineta Fontalpino Dofana Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione 2018 Wine Enthusiast 01/09/2023 92
Verbiage

Fresh tar, topsoil and grilled meat with a cherry-plum jam undertone characterize the nose. An earthy, meaty through line brings cherries, leather and then roots and herbs out on the palate, with tannins still standing at attention through the finish. — Danielle Callegari

Carpineta Fontalpino Montaperto Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione 2018 Wine Enthusiast 31/08/2023 92
Verbiage

A rich and brooding nose of tar, dark fruit, camphor and spices leads to a palate that’s also rich but sweet, with a grilled meat quality balanced by mixed berries, vanilla and milk chocolate, all held together with firm but flexible tannins.

Pietradolce Etna Rosso Barbagalli DOC 2019 James Suckling 25/08/2023 96
Verbiage

Ashy, sulfurous tonality of fruit with engaging earthy, savory berries, dried blood orange, dried meat, nori, white pepper and tar. Really intense, ripe and concentrated in flavor with a broad, full body. Paradoxically, there is very little heft. The tannins are abundant, fibrous and mealy. A great deal of depth and complexity here, too. Better in two to three years.

Pietradolce Archineri Etna Bianco DOC 2022 James Suckling 24/08/2023 94
Verbiage

Very pure and minerally nose that delivers a stony, precise feel, almost like sniffing a quarry. Some smoked tarragon and lemon zest, too. Impressive mid-palate tension here with nervy acidity and minerality. Pure and long. Delicious now.

Pietradolce Etna Rosso Contrada Rampante DOC 2020 James Suckling 24/08/2023 94
Verbiage

Tar, graphite, dried roses, dark minerals and oranges with just a hint of earthy sweet spices. Structured and full-bodied on the palate with a heap of dusty tannins and a lengthy, cohesive finish. Drink or hold.
