Hibiscus and Bing cherries give way to freshly brewed coffee before some final aromas of mushrooms and soil on the nose. The palate is both meaty and fruity, with final notes of dark chocolate and more coffee grounds balanced by tannins that cling and vibrant acidity.

A nose deeply perfumed with sweet aromas of cherry blossoms, rose petals and candied orange and then savory notes of wild oregano, balsamic vinegar and leather rolls onto a palate of cherries and strawberries with grainy tannins that emphasize later flavors of coffee grounds and freshly turned soil.

Dark and understated in the glass. The 2019 Aglianico del Vulture Pian del Cerro blends shaved cedar with dusty stone and dried berry aromas. It’s silky-smooth with cooling acidity and crisply ripe red and black fruits that cascade across a core of brisk acidity. This finishes long, classically dry and structured. A web of fine-grained tannins blankets the senses as licorice and spice notes fade. Very nice. In fact, the only thing I can hold against the Pian del Cerro is the necessary heft of the bottle.
